The debate – 1.6m behind bars: are there any lessons to learn from the US prison system? – will be chaired by investigative journalist, author and campaigner David Jessel.

- Clive Stafford Smith, founder of Reprieve who has spent 25 years working on behalf of defendants facing the death penalty in the US;

- Dr Sharon Shalev, research fellow Centre for Criminology, University of Oxford, author of Supermax: controlling risk through solitary confinement, and www.solitaryconfinement.org;
