Prisoners to be banned from claims

Prisoners to be banned from claims

Criminals are to be banned from making claims for injuries from a special fund set up to help victims of crime, according to the Guardian. Ken Clarke, the  justice secretary, is expected to tell MPs that he will prevent prisoners from making claims from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.

The proposals were trailed HERE in the Independent.

You can read Andy Henley on the proposals HERE.

‘If this proposal is genuine and ends up being implemented we will have severely undermined the basic principles of fairness and equality before the law. Furthermore, such policies bring into question the very nature of the relationship between the state and those whom it incarcerates.’ Andy Henley

According to the government, some  20,000 people with criminal records have been paid more than £75m in the past 10 years from the scheme.
