JOIN US for a debate about what the law means to young people in 21st Century Britain at City Hall.
The JusticeGap has joined forces with Hackney Community Law Centre, the University College London’s Centre for Access to Justice, and the Hackney Council of Voluntary Services to work on a major project aimed at young people to explain their legal rights and demystify the law. The initiative is backed by human rights lawyer Michael Mansfield QC and the former justice secretary Lord Willy Bach and involves young people in Hackney working with UCL law students to build a dedicated online advice guide about the law, aimed at and drawing on the experience of young people. On April 29th, at London’s City Hall, a high profile panel of youth workers, legal experts, politicians, lawyers and youth justice campaigners, will debate with and hear from young people about what the law means to them. The picture is of Sam, Gockche and Terrence – peer researchers on the Mind the Justice Gap.
The panel will be chaired by Jon Robins, a journalist (not a lawyer), HCLC patron and editor of www.justicegap.com and will include:
- Nicky Gavron AM – Londonwide Assembly Member, HCLC patron, and former Deputy Mayor of London (www.nickygavron.co.uk)
- Lord Colin Low CBE – HCLC patron, Peer in the House of Lords, and Chair of the Low Commission on of the Future of Advice and Legal Support
- Sandie Okoro – director of P.R.I.M.E Finance and ambassador for the Law Society Diversity’s access scheme
- Shauneen Lambe – barrister and director of youth legal charity Just for Kids Law
- Laura Janes – a solicitor both at the Howard League for Penal Reform and at Scott Moncrieff Solicitors. Laura founded the Young Legal Aid Lawyers
Topics for discussion will include:
- What is the state of young people’s legal rights today?
- Do you have to be white, middle class and go to university to be a lawyer?
- Can young lawyers make a difference?
- What are the legal profession’s responsibilities to the next generation of lawyers?
- Why would anyone want to be a lawyer anyone?
- Do young people feel the law is ‘for them’ or ‘against them’?
